Amazon listing audit: 12 checks every D2C brand should run this month
Amazon listings drift. New variants get added with sloppy copy. Reviews stack up unaddressed. Images become outdated. The result: a slow leak of organic traffic that compounds quietly. Here is the 12-point audit we run on every D2C brand on day one.
Why most listings leak
Amazon search rewards relevance, conversion rate, and review velocity. Three things, all measurable. Most listing leaks happen because one of those three is misaligned.
An audit is not a redesign. It is a quick check of all 12 items below, fix the broken ones, move on. The whole audit should take 60 to 90 minutes per listing.
1. Title structure
Brand + main keyword + key features + size or pack. In that order. No keyword stuffing.
Bad: Premium quality eco friendly bamboo wood handcrafted natural toothbrush adult medium soft bristle 4 pack family size set
Good: BambooBrush Soft Bristle Bamboo Toothbrush, Pack of 4, Adult Medium
2. Bullet points
Five bullets. Each one is a single benefit, written for a customer scanning on mobile. Lead with the benefit, follow with proof.
Bad: Made with 100 percent natural bamboo fibre. Good: 100 percent bamboo, biodegrades in 6 months, replaces 4 plastic toothbrushes a year per person.
3. Main image quality
Pure white background, product fills 85 percent of the frame, 2000 pixels on the longest side. Amazon enforces this and listings that violate get demoted in search.
Spot check on mobile, where 70 percent of your shoppers are. If the product reads at thumbnail size, it passes.
4. Image variants 2 to 7
Image 2: in-use shot. Image 3: scale or sizing. Image 4: key feature callouts. Image 5: lifestyle. Image 6: comparison vs competitor. Image 7: trust badges or certifications.
Most listings have 3 good images and 4 missing slots. The missing slots cost 15 to 20 percent of conversion rate.
5. A+ content (Brand Story or Premium A+)
A+ content lifts conversion rate by 5 to 10 percent. If you have brand registry and have not built A+ content, that is the single biggest unlock.
Use the side-by-side module to compare against generic competitors. Use the brand story module to give the brand a voice.
6. Backend search terms
Up to 250 bytes of hidden search terms. Most brands use 50 to 80. That is leaving organic discoverability on the table.
Fill all 250 bytes with relevant variants, synonyms, common misspellings, and search phrases your buyers actually use.
7. Variation parent setup
All your product variants (size, colour, pack) should sit under one parent ASIN. Most brands accidentally have orphan child ASINs with their own listings, splitting review counts and reducing rank.
Quick check: search your own brand on Amazon. If you see two of the same product as separate listings, you have an orphan.
8. Reviews velocity vs competition
Your category leader's review velocity is your benchmark. If they are getting 30 reviews a month and you are getting 4, the rank gap will only widen.
Tools to use: Amazon's Request a Review button on every order (free), Vine for new launches, and follow-up email flows in your CRM.
9. Pricing parity with the website
Amazon penalises listings priced higher than the same product on your website or another retailer. Your buy box can disappear overnight for this reason.
Run a weekly check: scrape your D2C site price and Amazon price into a Sheet. Flag anything off by more than 5 percent.
10. Sponsored Products structure
Three campaign types per ASIN: Branded defence (your own keywords), Category (broad terms), Competitor (other brand names). Most accounts skip Competitor entirely.
ACoS targets: 15 to 25 percent on branded, 25 to 35 percent on category, 35 to 45 percent on competitor. Above those, audit the keyword list.
11. Negative keywords
Run a search-term report monthly. Any term spending more than 200 INR with zero conversions becomes a negative keyword. This single move usually drops ACoS by 5 to 10 percent.
Add the negatives at both campaign and ad group level so they apply across the auto and broad-match campaigns.
12. Q&A section
Every unanswered question on your listing is a sale you are not closing. Spend 20 minutes a week answering every question, ideally from the brand account so it shows the badge.
Bonus: the most-voted question often hints at a missing bullet point. Add it to the listing.
Run the audit, then re-run it quarterly
Twelve checks, 60 to 90 minutes per listing. Most D2C brands gain 15 to 30 percent more organic traffic in the next 30 days just from cleaning up the basics.
Re-run the audit every quarter. Listings drift. Reviews stack. New competitors enter. The audit is the discipline that keeps your Amazon shelf alive.
